I. INTRODUCTION
A Brief History of Unismuh Makassar
University of Muhammadiyah Makassar, known as Unismuh Makassar, is one of private universities, which is quite big in eastern part of Indonesia. For the last four decades, Unismuh Makassar has made a tremendous trip towards becoming a leading, trusted and self-sufficient university, which is the vision of this university. To provide an excellently qualified education for the society, this university keeps improving its services and facilities. As a private university, Unismuh Makassar is coordinated under KOPERTIS Wil.IX, which is a government-funded institution that coordinates private higher education in Indonesia.
Unismuh Makassar was founded on 19 June 1963 as a branch of Unismuh Jakarta. The establishment of this university was an implementation of the result of the 21st meeting of Muhammadiyah Organization of South and South-East Sulawesi Chapters conducted in Bantaeng. As of 1 October 1965, Unismuh Makassar was officially declared as a registered private university based on its establishment certificate No: 71/19 June 1963 prepared by Wongsowidjojo.
Initially, Unismuh Makassar only had two faculties: Faculty of Teacher Training and Education and Faculty of Tarbiyah. As these two faculties were well developed, their branches were opened in other parts of South Sulawesi islands, each of which have been self-sufficient and become either a university or a higher education of their own management. Following the success of Faculty of Education, other faculties were set up, starting respectively from Faculty of Social and Political Science, Faculty of Economic Study, Faculty of Technique, Faculty of Agriculture, Postgraduate Study Program and Postgraduate Teaching Certificate Program.
Unismuh Makassar has tree campuses on different locations. The main building locates on the strategic area, south of Makassar, and is built on 3,4 acre land. To date, this university has more than 10.000 students studying different subjects.

II. ACADEMIC SYSTEM
University of Muhammadiyah Makassar executes higher education, research activities and community services based on islamic conduct. The principal pattern applied emphasizes on students’ self- sufficiency and entrepreneurship. The specific characteristic of the academics at this university is courses on Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyaan, which aim at preparing religious scholar.
The courses offered consist of academic education and professional education. The former involves a first and second degree while the latter covers diploma program (D1, D2, D3 and D4).
The new academic year, starts early September and ends in June of the following year, is divided into two semester, odd and even semester, each of which consists of 16 active weeks in the form of lecturing, seminar, symposium, discussion, workshop, practicum and other scientific activities. The academic administration implements System of Semester Credit. Although the curriculum used follows the National Curriculum, it also covers Local Content set up by the rector.
The evaluation and assessment towards students’ learning progress is conducted periodically through written examinations, assignments and observations following an applicable regulation.

The academic staff of University of Muhammadiyah Makassar consists of full time and part time lecturer, about 215 altogether. Fourteen of them hold a doctoral degree, 110 have a master degree and the rest of them hold a qualified first degree.
